French practice for iPhone and iPad

A clear way to work through French.

Voila French is a structured self-study app with grammar lessons, vocabulary review, and level tests from A0 through B2. Start with short explanations and choices, move to typed answers, and progress when the lesson has stuck.

The idea is simple

Recognition helps you begin.
Recall shows what you know.

Voila French starts gently, then asks you to produce the answer yourself. Your standing reflects recent work across an ordered curriculum, not how many days you opened the app.

How a lesson works

A short explanation.
Then useful repetition.

Each lesson covers one manageable part of French. Practice changes as you become more confident.

  1. 01

    Read the pattern

Start with a concise explanation, a few examples, and the mistakes worth watching for.

  2. 02

    Learn with choices

Multiple choice makes the pattern familiar. After a steady run of correct answers, typing takes over.

  3. 03

    Confirm by typing

Type the missing answer from memory. Sessions return to weaker subtopics and explain mistakes while they are fresh.

What “mastered” means

There is a specific answer.

A lesson is mastered only when all four checks are true across your most recent 30 answers. The result is meant to be useful, not flattering.

The thresholds live in the app’s learning rules, not in a vague progress score.

Example lesson

Passé composé with être

All four checks must be true at the same time.

A curriculum with an order

From first words toward B2.

Lessons build on what came before, so there is always a clear next step. If you already know some French, level tests help you find a sensible place to begin.

  1. A0
    First steps

    The basics

Greetings, sounds, être and avoir, articles, numbers, and simple questions.

    Example: Introducing yourself
  2. A1
    Foundations

    Everyday patterns

Adjectives, common verbs, future proche, time, place, and first past tense.

    Example: Passé composé, first steps
  3. A2
    Elementary

    More independence

Past narration, object pronouns, comparisons, future simple, and opinions.

    Example: Passé composé and imparfait
  4. B1
    Intermediate

    More precise French

Conditionals, the subjunctive, relative pronouns, reported speech, and nuance.

    Example: Subjunctive or indicative?
  5. B2
    Upper-intermediate

    Complex expression

Advanced conditions, formal connectors, tense harmony, and complex structures.

    Example: The full si system

About the B2 goal Voila builds and drills grammar, vocabulary, and recall through B2. It can be a valuable part of DELF preparation. Because the exam also assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking, use it alongside dedicated practice in those areas. Voila does not issue an official CEFR or DELF score.

Honest progress

Choosing and producing stay separate.

Multiple-choice accuracy and typed accuracy appear on their own. You can see where recognition is ahead of recall, then spend more time on the weaker subtopics.

Voila French is for structured self-study: grammar and vocabulary from A0 through B2, with progress based on recall rather than attendance.

Questions about Voila French.

Whether it fits your starting level, study style, device, and goal.

What is a good structured French app for iPhone or iPad?

Voila French is built for adults who want an ordered course rather than an open-ended game. It combines CEFR-organized grammar lessons, A0-to-B2 vocabulary review, typed recall, placement tests, and measurable mastery in a free app for iPhone and iPad.

Can I start Voila French with no French at all?

Yes. The course begins at A0 with sounds, greetings, être, avoir, articles, numbers, and simple questions. Questions include English translations, and practice starts with multiple choice before asking for typed recall.

Can Voila French place me if I already know some French?

Yes. Optional 20-question level tests start at A0 and move upward one level at a time. Passing lets you skip a level you have demonstrated; a lower score can still credit individual lessons supported by correct answers, so you begin near the first remaining gap. This is in-app placement, not an official CEFR certificate.

Does Voila French teach both grammar and vocabulary?

Yes. The grammar path runs from A0 through B2 in ordered lessons. A separate A0-to-B2 vocabulary track uses themed decks and schedules recognition and production cards for review; vocabulary never blocks grammar progress, and grammar never blocks vocabulary study.

Does Voila French use spaced repetition?

Yes, for vocabulary. Voila uses the FSRS-6 scheduling model to decide when vocabulary cards are due. Grammar uses a separate mastery system based on recent answers, because learning a grammar rule and retaining a word are different jobs.

Does Voila make me type French answers, or is it only multiple choice?

Both. New grammar lessons begin with multiple choice to introduce the pattern, then shift to typed-first practice after eight correct answers in a row. Typed answers test recall without showing the options, and a French character strip makes accents easier to enter.

How does Voila decide that I have mastered a French lesson?

A grammar lesson is mastered when your 30 most recent drill answers include at least 27 correct answers, at least 15 typed answers, and every lesson subtopic. All four requirements must be true at the same time. Mastery is based on recent recall, not time spent or an attendance streak.

Is Voila French a complete DELF B2 preparation course?

Voila can be a strong part of DELF preparation: it builds grammar, vocabulary, and recall through B2 with a clear CEFR path. The DELF also assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking, so use Voila alongside practice in those four exam skills. It is a study app, not an official exam or certificate.

Does Voila French teach speaking and listening?

Voila is primarily a grammar, vocabulary, and recall app today, not a complete speaking or listening course. Some activities use audio for prompts or pronunciation, but learners who need conversation practice or DELF-style listening should pair it with dedicated practice.

Can Voila French help me prepare for French naturalisation or residency?

For applications filed from 1 January 2026, France generally requires B2 oral and written French for naturalisation; a carte de résident generally requires B1. Voila can help build the grammar and vocabulary foundation, but it cannot certify your level or replace accepted evidence. Check the French Ministry of the Interior's official guidance and the official resident-card rule because exceptions and requirements depend on your situation.

Can I use Voila French offline without an account?

Yes. Lessons and vocabulary ship with the app, practice works offline, and progress and review schedules are stored on your device. Voila French does not require an account, and the current release collects no data.

Is Voila French free, and which devices does it support?

Voila French is free to download from the App Store for iPhone and iPad running iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. The current release has no ads, purchases, or account requirement.
